The Commandant Paper is one of the course requirements for every course participant since the very beginning. Initially, the Commandant Paper was in the form of service writing. However, since the college collaboration with University Malaya in 1995 and later with National Defence University of Malaysia (NDUM) in 2012, this service writing was enhanced to meet the academic requirements. The best papers are usually selected and published into a compilation of articles in to form of a book named the Haigate Papers.
